JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title / English TEACHER
Reporting To / The Head
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To promote the social, academic, moral, physical and emotional development of each child in the safe, caring and stimulating environment of the school.
To fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the post as delegated by the Head and Deputy Head.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Within the Head’s policies and directives to:
  • Report to the Deputy Head and communicate professionally to them in academic matters and in the day-to-day organisation of the School.
  • Communicate with all concerned (includes regular meetings to encourage a democratic and open style of communication within the School). Form the communication link between SLT (Senior Management Team), staff and pupils concerning clubs and activities, ensuring that the SLT is kept well informed of any proposals or developments that affect the School, staff, pupils, parents or related organisation.
  • Support the SLT in the implementation of school policies, procedures and the development of the School’s distinctive ethos.
  • Promote and encourage liaison with appropriate schools.
  • Contribute to the compilation of the school calendar.
  • Comply with staff duty rosters as requested by the Head.
  • Attend appropriate meetings and take minutes for circulation for staff.
  • Establish appropriate internal systems for monitoring and evaluating the pupils’ progress and attainment.
  • Work with the SLT in the professional review of supporting staff and to assist in performance reviews and their evaluation.
  • Fulfil role in the school’s grievance procedures, pastoral arrangements and discipline procedures, maintaining a high profile in discipline within the sporting arrangements of the School.

TEACHER’S MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Curriculum
Within the school’s academic policy to:
  • Plan and prepare work appropriate to the needs of the pupils.
  • Make sure that all the schemes of work are up to date.
  • Teach pupils using methods appropriate to the needs of the pupils and delivering the curriculum in a varied, exciting and stimulating way.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effort, progress, work standards and organisation of pupils, keeping up to date the necessary records and taking relevant actions.
  • Monitor and respond to curriculum developments and initiatives at both national and local levels.
  • To assess children’s ability and work in line with the policies set by the School and individual departments; recording assessments in a clear and meaningful way.
  • To mark children’s work in accordance with the with the department’s policy of AFL.
  • To apply the principles of AFL to achieve individualised pupil learning through careful target setting.
  • To ensure the requirements of any Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are met.
  • Whilst respecting confidentiality, report on the progress of individual pupils to parents, colleagues and pupils as necessary.
  • To facilitate the passing on of information to assist with future planning.
  • To work closely in a team with other teachers and assistants.
  • To evaluate your own performance.
  • To ensure a high standard of display work on classroom boards at all times.
  • To attend staff meetings, parents’ meetings and curriculum meetings.
  • To make rigorous use of analysis data and evaluate performance against data provided.
  • To Implement strategies to improve performance by using relevant data to track, monitor, support and challenge all pupils within English by effectively leading all departmental staff and ensuring accountability at all levels.
  • Toproduce reports on examination performance – including value added data.
Pastoral Care
Within the school’s pastoral policy to:
  • Maintain good order and promote self discipline among pupils, with a view to their well-being and safety.
  • Deal appropriately with sickness and injury.
  • Behave correctly towards pupils (treat pupils with respect and compassion). Encourage respect for self, others and the environment of the school.
  • Adhere to the Health & Safety policy document in the Staff Handbook.
  • To act as a Form Tutor and to look after the well-being and pastoral needs of the children in your class.
  • To be aware of the needs of children in linked classes.
  • To communicate effectively and regularly with parents and other staff.
Administration & Organisation
Within the school’s administrative policy to carry out the following:
  • Planning.
  • Reporting.
  • Attending staff meetings, parents’ evenings and other school functions.
  • Carrying out supervisory duties as required.
  • Auditing required resources
  • Obtaining authorisation for expenditure.
  • Maintaining school records as necessary.
  • Organising and maintaining a stimulating and attractive school environment, updating resources as required.
Communication
Within the school’s communication policy to:
  • Maintain good communication as necessary with colleagues, interested parties, pupils and parents.
  • Maintain appropriate level of liaison with the local community.
Self-Development
Within the school’s development policy to:
  • Review own performance and identify self-development needs in discussion with superior and colleagues as appropriate.
  • Attend in-service training course where appropriate.
  • Participate in appraisal and performance review.
Safeguarding
The job holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young person’s for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the relevant Cognita Safeguarding; Child Protection Policy and Procedures at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the role, the job holder identifies any instance that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm either at school or at home, s/he must report any concerns to the School’s Child Protection Officer/Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Head or indeed to the Regional CEO so that a referral can be made accordingly to the relevant third party services.
