Suggested Guidelines for G/T Six-Hour Annual Updates for

Elementary Administrators, Counselors, and Teachers

Things that will count:

· G/T training offered by the G/T facilitators or at Region 16

· New Jersey Writing Project

· Training relating to academic competitions (may be counted only once within a 5 year period)

· Developing Literacy First or Supporting Literacy and related components within reasonable limits

· Vertical teaming as it relates to advanced academic students (must be a minimum of 18 clock hours per school year and cannot be counted more than two years consecutively)

· Training on independent study as it relates to advanced learners

· TexTeams Math provided that actual clock hours exceed 18

· Technology training provided that training occurred in the correct calendar year (must be a minimum of twelve clock hours and have prior approval)

Other things may count if the following guidelines are followed:

Prior approval is strongly recommended and is required for a presenter to advertise the session for 6-hour credit.

Presenter or facilitator of the session(s) must have experience or training in gifted education.

Teachers must send a copy of the certificate of the training attended if other than offered by the G/T facilitators to obtain proper credit.

Content must relate to current issues in gifted education, be supported by research relating to G/T and relate to at least one of the TAGT core areas and suggested teacher competencies. Core areas are: Nature and Needs of G/T Learners, Identification and Assessment, Social and Emotional Needs, Creativity and Instructional Strategies and Differentiated Curriculum.*

Teachers should keep a balance in their updates, not always getting their annual updates in the same G/T core area (see above *). In addition, teachers should have training designed for and specifically designated as G/T every third year of their annual updates. Teachers should keep track of their own updates. A form that can be used for this purpose is available on the G/T website. If there are any questions about a staff development session, teachers or administrators should contact their G/T facilitator.
