AED GRANTS

In the spirit of sharing in information, I wanted to make sure you guys
were aware that the Superintendent's Weekly Message over the last few
weeks contained information about the newest round of grant applications
from the Department of Public Health for matching AED grants. I know in
the past I had received multiple calls about matching funds and grant
applications. Here is the information that has appeared in there:
The FY 08 Heartsaver AED Grant Application has been released by the
Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). They will begin accepting
applications on October 12, 2007. This is a matching grant program
designed to provide funding assistance to certain organizations required
by law to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The Grant
Application and guidance has been posted on the IDPH website and can be
found at http://www.idph.state.il.us/ems/index.htm under the heading of
"EMS Grant Opportunities". If you have any questions, please contact
Brandy Lane at or 217-558-0560.
In addition, today's weekly message also contained a blurb about the
infamous moment of silence legislation. Here is what we put out:
SB 1463 has become law (no Public Act number has been assigned at this
time) and requires (instead of only permitting) each public school
classroom to observe a brief period of silence for all students at the
opening of every school day. The law states that the period shall not be
conducted as a religious exercise, but as "an opportunity for silent
prayer or for silent reflection on the anticipated activities of the
day". This Agency considers the length of the "brief period", which is
not further defined in law, to be a decision most appropriately made at
the local level. For questions, contact the Accountability Division at
217/782-2948. A link to the law is below:
