Sewing Safety Rules

1.  When operating a sewing machine, sew at a SLOW SPEED.

2.  When sewing, place your fingers, to either side of the presser foot, not directly in front of or near the needle. “U”

3.  Forcing or pulling the fabric through the sewing machine may cause the needle to break. Let the feed dog move the fabric through the machine.

4.  DO NOT sew over pins placed in the fabric.

5.  When not sewing, remove you foot from the foot control and place it on the floor.

6.  The cords on the sewing machine should be untangled and placed out of the traffic path to prevent others from tripping.

7.  Disconnect the sewing machine by removing the plug from the wall outlet not by jerking/pulling the cord

8.  Disconnect the plug from the wall outlet (source of power) first, then the plug from the machine.

9.  Place pins and needles in a container/grab it when not in use

10.  Pins and needles should never be placed in your mouth.

11.  When not in use, scissors/shears should be left closed.

12.  Pass sharp objects to others with the handle first.

13.  Always cut away from you when using a rotary cutter. NEVER USE A BACK AND FORTH (SAWING) MOTION WITH THE ROTARY CUTTER AND NEVER HOLD THE RULER FOR SOMEONE ELSE WHEN THEY ARE CUTTING. ALWAYS WEAR A SAFETY GLOVE.

Apparel Lab Guidelines

1.  Take book bags to the designated area as soon as you arrive in class.

2.  Get your supply tray. Take it to your assigned table, be seated and wait for teacher instruction.

3.  To receive teacher assistance in the sewing lab, write your name on the whiteboard. The only exception is for an injury.

4.  ALL EQUIPMENT AND SHEARS MUST BE RETURNED AT THE END OF CLASS TO CORRECT STORAGE BOX

5.  Each student will be given one bobbin to fit his/her machine. If you lose you bobbin, you must purchase a new one for $1.00.

6.  STAY AT YOUR ASSIGNED WORK/MACHINE AREA. ABSOLUTELY NO PULLING UP A CHAIR OR STOOL BESIDE A FRIEND’S MACHINE TO SOCIALIZE.

7.  One person to a machine at a time.

8.  Follow all rules for safe operation of equipment.

9.  Report all accidents, malfunctioning machines and broken needles immediately. You are expected to replace the broken needle in the machine.

10.  No food or drinks at the sewing machines or in the apparel lab at any time.

11.  The final 5 minutes of class are clean up time. All equipment must be returned to the correct place. All trash baskets must be emptied. Turn off machines and unplug irons. Place your fabric, bobbin, thread and person items in your storage tray. Sweep floor and leave your work area spotless. If your work area is not clean and/or you do not put away all items, you will lose sewing privilege the next lab day.
