This achievement standard involves the student demonstrating interpersonal skills in a group or team situation, and describing the effects the use of interpersonal skills had on the functioning of the group or team.

Explanatory Notes

1This achievement standard is derived from Health and Physical Education in the NewZealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 1999, and relates to Level 6 Achievement Objectives A4, B4, C1, C2, and C3.

2Interpersonal skills may include or relate to:

  • leadership
  • effective communication
  • personal and social responsibility
  • cooperation
  • giving and receiving feedback
  • acceptance of diversity
  • supporting and encouraging others
  • inclusiveness
  • demonstrating specific aspects of fair play
  • problem solving
  • negotiation

3The group or team should be involved in any competitive or recreational physical activity. The activities could include, but are not limited to: fitness, dance, outdoor education, games, te reo kori, sport and aquatics, as outlined in the Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum key areas of learning.

4The effects on the functioning of the group or team in this achievement standard may include, but are not limited to:

  • improved performance
  • improved success
  • increased enjoyment
  • better communication
  • quality of teamwork.

5The evaluation should also include considerations for improvement such as:

  • how and why the interpersonal skills could be used or adapted so they would be more effective in helping the team function better
  • suggestions for how interpersonal skills could be modified for future use and why this might be desirable in relation to the functioning of the team and interpersonal skill development. Future use could be in the same group or team or in another context. If no change is considered desirable, then this conclusion must be justified.

1Providers and Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against achievement standards.

2Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against achievement standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those achievement standards.
