Overall Purpose of the Job

To work with the Falls of Clyde Ranger and Reserve Manager in delivering visitor and conservation management at the Falls of Clyde wildlife reserve.

Main Duties

  1. Undertake daily reserve patrols, ensuring Scottish Wildlife Trust Health and Safety procedures are followed. As part of this the Seasonal Ranger will be required to maintain an incident log and visual reserve inspection log.
  1. Undertake a wide ranger of practical conservation tasks. This will primarily be access works, fencing, footpath strimming and general maintenance.
  1. Work with and support a wide range of volunteers. Including leading a team of practical volunteers once a week as required.
  1. Run a series of public and private group events including guided walks, activities, birthday parties and evening walks (primarily badger watches). Other events will include hedgehog house building workshops and wildlife explorers (den building, etc.).
  1. Carry out biological recording, e.g. butterfly transect, bumblebee transects and an annual bird box monitoring programme.
  1. Assist with and lead environmental education activities for school groups and the public on the reserve and in the wider community.
  1. Update the Falls of Clyde blog, Twitter and Facebook accounts. Write a short article for the local newspaper as required. Set up social media campaigns for advertising events.
  1. If a pair of peregrines re-establishes on site, the Seasonal Ranger will be required to assist in the staffing of Operation Peregrine our peregrine watch site when required. This will include maintaining the watch site, engaging with members of the public, looking after volunteers, monitoring the peregrines and running a small gift shop. As part of this the ranger will be required tolive on the reserve, providing overnight protection in basic accommodation (this accommodation will also be available for use throughout the duration of the contract).
  1. To liaise with members of the public – interpreting wildlife, answering questions and informing visitors about the reserve in an interesting and friendly manner.
  1. Actively recruit members to the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
  1. Any other duties as required.

Personal Specification

Qualifications, Training and Experience:
Essential
  • HNClevel in Countryside Management (or similar);
  • Full UK driving licence;
  • Brushcutter certificate;
  • Experience of delivering practical conservation tasks;
  • Organised and led public events;
  • Biological recording.
Desirable
  • Membership training and experience of membership recruitment;
  • Assisted in the delivery of environmental education;
  • Experience of working with and supporting a team of volunteers.
