December 2014

Dear LMS Member,

I write to remind you that subscriptions, including payments for periodicals for personal use, for the session November 2014–October 2015become due on 1 November 2014, and should be paid no later than1December 2014(except for Direct Debits, see below).

Direct Debit Payments

Bank accounts of members paying by direct debit will be contacted to confirm the date on which their account will be debited with the appropriate amount. Members should note the change of date from previous years when payments were debited in the January. This is to bring the payment schedule in line with the membership year.

Payments by other methods

Members who do not currently pay by direct debit should enclose a cheque (£ sterling or US$) with their form. It is also possible to pay by credit/debit card.

The Society wouldencourage members to pay by direct debit. Any member who holds a UK bank account and who wishes to take advantage of this convenient form of paymentshould read the attached guidance on setting up a direct debit or contact the Membership Department for further details (email: , phone: 020 7291 9973).

Journal Subscription Rates

  • The prices for the 2015Journal Volumesare listed on the attached form.
  • Members now have the choice of taking a free electronic subscription to the Bulletin, Journal, Proceedings of the LMS and/or Nonlinearityfor personal use only. Members must indicate their choice on the attached form.
  • Alternatively, members may receive both the print and electronic versions for the Bulletin, Journal, Proceedings of the LMS and/or Nonlinearity.
  • Please note it is essential the Society is given a current email address if you wish to subscribe to electronic access of any of the above journals.
  • If you take a free electronic subscription to the Bulletin, Journal, and/orProceedings of the LMS, your email address will be passed on to Oxford University Press who will contact you with details on how to access the journals.
  • If you take a free electronic subscription to the Nonlinearity, your email address will be passed on to the Institute of Physics who will contact you with details on how to access the journals.

Donations

Finally, would you consider making a donation to the London Mathematical Society? In making a donation - which you can do using the attached form - you would be following in a tradition established by G.H. Hardy and others. Moreover, as a registered charity, the Society can reclaim the tax on your donation (an extra 25p for each £1) if you are a UK taxpayer. In the last fewyears, we have had a very positive response to this appeal.

Yours sincerely

Professor Robert Curtis

Treasurer

LMS PUBLICATIONS

  1. The LMS has a pricing structure that allows individual members to purchase print copies with online access to the Bulletin, Journal,Proceedings of the LMSand Nonlinearity, for personal use only, at a substantial discount. In common with other mathematical societies, the Society regards a subscription as for personal use only if:
  2. issues are either destroyed or held on a continuing basis among the member's personal belongings, and are not deposited even temporarily in a library, common room or other public room, and
  3. issues are accessible to other mathematicians (or to students) only with the member's permission, given individually in each case, and
  4. electronic subscriptions are only for personal use and may not be made accessible to other mathematicians.

Issues are the personal property of members, who would be able, without negotiation with authorities, to take the issues with them if they left their present institution or to give them to another individual who is willing to abide by these terms.

  1. The Society reserves the right to discontinue the supply of periodicals to members whose subscriptions remain unpaid by 1 December 2014 (where the subscription arrives after 1 December, then back issues will be supplied but with some delay).

  1. The Society is associated with the publication of three book series:
  • the LMS Student Texts(CambridgeUniversity Press),
  • LMS Lecture Note Series (CambridgeUniversity Press),
  • LMS Monographs (Princeton University Press and, for books published prior to 2004, Oxford University Press).

All these publications are available at a discount to individual members on orders placed direct with the publisher.
