In the World

of Fifth Grade…

It has been a wonderful first half of the school year! Keep up the hard work boys and girls!

This month we will continue mini lessons to prepare our 5th grade students for the upcoming PSSA Reading, Math, and Writing exams in March and April.

PSSA Writing- March 31st to April 4th

PSSA Reading and Math- March 17th – 28th

We would appreciate it if you try not to schedule any vacations or doctor appointments during these dates.

ü  Please check your student’s homework books and our websites for upcoming quizzes and tests.

ü  Please continue to sign all graded assignments.

This Month’s Curriculum

Communications:

In Literature Studies we are using Common Core text to study comprehension skills. We are learning about Fables, Poetry, Fairy Tales, and so much more.

Spelling words will be given biweekly.

We are continuing with our word study program Words Their Way.

Writing:

We are working daily in our writer’s workshop notebooks writing short stories.

Students will be practicing Personal Narratives, Opinions and Informational writing pieces.

Math:

Unit 7 focuses on Exponents and Negative Numbers.

Science:

In Science we will be studying Levers and Pulleys and analyzing real world tools and machines that make them work.

Social Studies:

In Social Studies we will focus on chapter 6 and the Early English Settlements. Students will also be taking the Mid-Year Assessment for Chapters 1-6.

Fantastic Fifth Graders!

We are celebrating our student’s successes monthly in a small award ceremony.
