Director of Finance

1.PURPOSE AND SCOPE

1.1.Under the direction of the Curriculum Leader or other appropriate supervisor, and in accordance with the practices and procedures of the school, ensure that a safe, effective and efficient workshop technical service is provided for the use of students and teaching staff, including, where applicable, the provision of technical advice and assistance in the classroom.

2.ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

2.1.Responsible to the Curriculum Leader or other appropriate supervisor but works to the requirements of individual teachers on a day to day basis.

2.2.To liaise with the Director of Finance regarding holidays and work undertaken outside of teaching term. (This may involve activities such as PAT testing outside of the Design Technology department.)

3.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1.Provision of Practical Facilities and Resources

3.1.1.To prepare materials for students’ work including use of a circular saw, power hacksaw, guillotine and bandsaw.

3.1.2.When requested by teaching staff, to demonstrate the use of different equipment and materials with particular regard to safety, including providing technical advice, assistance and supervision to students during practicals, project work and assessments. To advise teachers, when required, particularly those teaching outside the specialism, being retrained or on probation.

3.1.3.To install, test and calibrate both existing and new equipment.

3.1.4.To support the staff in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) equipment, undertaking training if necessary.

3.2.Construction and Development of Apparatus and Equipment

3.2.1.To construct and devise equipmentto meet the changing needs of practical programmes, including the manufacture of teaching aids. To adapt apparatus and basic storage facilities.

3.2.2.At the request of teaching staff, to provide assistance to students applying basic constructional skills.

3.2.3.To construct and maintain the plug-in peripheral equipment for computers and electronic measuring devices.

3.2.4.To produce storage equipment, jigs, formers, display units, teaching aids and projects of various kinds.

3.3.Maintenance of Departmental Facilities and Resources

3.3.1.To maintain, within the competence of the technician, the plant and equipment in the department, undertaking routine maintenance and minor repairs, advising on the need for more extensive repair or maintenance work.

3.3.2.To maintain condition of tools by grinding and sharpening wood and metal edge tools and general tool maintenance.

3.3.3.To ensure that any hazardous materials/spills are removed from the sinks, benchtops and other areas to provide a safe environment for cleaning staff and others. To deal with spillages/emergencies during practical activities.

3.3.4.To maintain benches, vices, sawing hooks, shooting boards, bench tops and work tables of all units.

3.3.5.To monitor the condition and stock levels of all apparatus and materials with regard to safety and economy by undertaking regular checks. To diagnose faults and take necessary action accordingly, including proposing alternatives for damaged/faulty equipment.

3.3.6.To oil and maintain machines and equipment in all workshops and Art Studios on a day-to-day basis including fitting of belts, repair of guards, grinding of centres and daily machine adjustments for safe working.

3.3.7.To maintain all safety equipment used by technicians, teaching staff and students to be highest standard, including the annual PAT testing.

3.3.8.To receive, check and store all equipment and materials reporting on stock levels and conditions as required, checking and storing all deliveries in an efficient and safe manner.

3.3.9.Link with local industry in order to obtain materials and equipment that might otherwise be thrown away and sort, standardise and store such materials.

3.4.General Responsibilities

3.4.1.Toprovide assistance and advice when contractors or others are working within the workshop.

3.4.2.To liaise with external agencies such as suppliers and manufacturers regarding the provision, installation and repair of equipment and furniture.

3.5Health and Safety

3.5.1.To be aware of, and comply with, all departmental / school instructions and procedures relating to health and safety at work and to recognise the main responsibilities required under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated legislation, including undertaking regular safety audits.

To contribute to safe working practice in preparation / storage / teaching areas.

3.5.2.To maintain an up to date knowledge of technical developments in the field.

3.5.3.To undertake general tasks according to the needs of the department such as maintenance of workshops, preparation of store rooms, transporting supplies, reprographic duties, preparation of audio / visual material as required by department teaching staff etc.

3.5.4.To participate in the regular Technician meetings.

3.5.5.To maintain flexibility as to which area of the department the work is to be undertaken, with movement to other areas or sites as required (while attempting to recognise subject specialism) and in working partnership with other technicians particularly during non-teaching times to ensure the safety of all.

3.5.6.To inform the Curriculum Leader of any deficiencies in any equipment tested that would make it unrepairable or unsafe.

3.5.7.Supporting the completion of risk assessments.

3.5.8.To undertake any other duties within the scope of the post, as required by the Curriculum Leader or other appropriate supervisor, in particular those which derive from the changing demands of the National Curriculum.

3.5.9.Take responsibility for display work within the department and related areas.

This post could be undertaken in conjunction with other posts at the school.
