Brief description of existing facilities:

Brunel University

Brunel University currently offers the following main sports facilities at suitable specifications for Training Camp use:

·  Indoor Athletics Centre – 132m, 6-lane sprints and hurdles straight, 2x long and triple jump pits, pole vault, high jump, throws nets, performance strength and conditioning area.

·  Outdoor Athletics Arena – 400m, 6-lane running track. 4 x long and triple jump pits in 2 directions. Pole vault in 2 directions. High jump on a synthetic area inside the first track bend. Synthetic javelin approaches in 2 directions. Separate shot putt area with gravel landing areas. Full height hammer/discus cage level with the centre line of the grass throws field. All facilities meet IAAF technical standards.

·  Netball Hall –also suitable for volleyball, basketball, table tennis, boxing and other martial arts. The floor is a sprung wooden system.

·  6 Grass Pitches and full size 3G floodlit pitch – suitable for football, blind football (if temporary kickboards installed) and/or archery and Paralympic archery

·  Exercise Studio – Suitable for boxing and martial arts.

Satellite Venues

The existing satellite venues in West London within a short journey time from the University offer:

·  Additional athletics venues to UK Athletics Class 1 certification standard and suitable for Training Camp use at Perivale (floodlit 8 lane), Willesden (floodlit 6 lane), Linford Christie (floodlit 8 lane + 2 x8 lane 100m straights), Harrow School (floodlit 6 lane) and Hillingdon (floodlit 8 lane with 10 lane straight). All offer facilities and equipment for both track and field. Willesden and Hillingdon are new facilities and await final UKA certification)

·  A second Indoor Athletics Training Centre at the new Willesden Sports Centre suitable for sprint training – 80m (not throws or jumps)

·  Southall Sports Centre with table tennis hall, an ETTA Premier Club and experience of hosting national level training and competitions

·  Two major gymnastics training centres at Heathrow and Hillingdon (plus a smaller centre suitable for some Training Camp activity adjacent to the Harrow Leisure Centre)

·  A 6 court specialist badminton centre at Hounslow, home to the Middlesex County Badminton Association

·  A national training centre for disability sport at ASPIRE with experience of hosting GB squad for wheelchair basketball and also suitable as a Training Camp for a range of other Paralympic sports

·  Large sports centre halls, health and fitness and other ancillary facilities suitable for Training Camps for one or more of the following sports – basketball, wheelchair basketball , fencing, wheelchair fencing, judo, table tennis, wheelchair table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, sitting volleyball, wheelchair rugby, boccia, goalball - at Capital City Academy, Willesden Sports Centre, Zoom Leisure, John Lyons School, Harrow Leisure Centre

·  Sports fields with wheelchair access suitable for archery and Paralympic archery at Harrow School and John Lyon School and at Roger Bannister SC.

·  Floodlit, full size grass football pitch with ancillary facilities suitable for football and blind football Training Camps at Brentford FC’s existing Griffin Park site (and at three other major club grounds in West London - QPR, Chelsea and Fulham)

Brief description of planned / new facilities:

Brunel University

By 2010, Brunel also plans to be able to offer:

·  Sports Hall – upgrading to the flooring and lighting of the University’s second large hall. Once upgraded it will be suitable for Training Camp use for one or more of the following sports: volleyball, basketball, table tennis, boxing, other martial arts.

·  Water-based artificial pitch – upgrading to existing sand-based, full size floodlit pitch to a water-based pitch suitable for hockey

·  3 indoor hard tennis courts – Plan to cover and upgrade 3 of 6 existing porous macadam courts to make them suitable for wheelchair tennis training (acrylic surface)

Satellite Venues

By 2010, satellite venues within a short distance from Brunel plan to offer:

·  A 50m swimming pool - The London Borough of Hillingdon plans a 50m indoor swimming pool adjacent to Hillingdon Athletics Stadium and the Uxbridge College Park Road campus, 2km from Brunel University. In addition to the indoor pool, the project includes reinstatement of a 50m lido, a 4 court sports hall and a range of ancillary facilities. The pools will meet the specifications for Training Camp use for swimming and for water polo.

·  Two further large sports halls with high specification ancillary facilities - Uxbridge College, adjacent to Hillingdon Athletics Stadium and just 2km from Brunel University, plans a new 8-court sports hall to appropriate specifications for a range of Olympic and Paralympic sports. LB Harrow plans a major refurbishment or replacement of the Harrow Leisure Centre. If replaced, this Centre will be developed adjacent to the existing centre – ie. approximately 17 km from the ‘hub’ facilities at Brunel.

·  One further athletics facility – Roger Bannister Sports Centre to be totally refurbished or replaced to provide a certified track and field facilities with ancillary indoor changing and related facilities

(By 2011, subject to funding and planning, Brenford Community Stadium will replace the existing Griffin Park ground and offer a further sports hall suitable for Training Camp use in a number of sports plus further back up accommodation, catering, health and fitness and training rooms).
