ACADEMIC CALENDAR CHANGES

* When you have read the instructions and understood the examples below; please delete them and use the bottom of this form for submission to your Curriculum Committee.

A “course change” is a change to at most two of: number, title, prerequisites or description. Changes to three or more aspects of a course require submission of a “new course” proposal. Submissions should include the complete current Calendar entry, the proposed entry with the change highlighted.

“Program change submissions should include the current requirements, the proposed requirements, and an appropriate commentary. The current and proposed requirements should be complete listings so that changes can be reviewed in context. Submissions should not include other editorial changes proposed by the department. Deleted text should remain but be indicated by using the ‘strikethrough’ feature. Any additions are to be highlighted in yellow.

COURSE AND PROGRAM CHANGES

COURSE CHANGE EXAMPLE: ENVS 4460 / GEOG 4444. Methods of Environmental and Natural Resource Analysis
Current Wording / Revised Wording
ENVS 4460 / GEOG 4444. Methods of Environmental and Natural Resource Analysis
3 credit hours
Prerequisites: 60 credit hours, including one of ENVS 1203, 2300, 2310, or GEOG 3304, and one of MATH 1216, GEOG 3326, MGSC 2207 or BIOL 2308
This interdisciplinary course provides a tool-kit of methods for planning and evaluation in natural resource and environmental management. Emphasis is placed on methods to assess dynamics of change in biophysical, ecological, socioeconomic, and technological aspects of resource and environmental systems, and for analysing the impacts of management interventions. Topics to be covered include computer-based techniques to acquire and manage information; bio-economic and simulation models; statistical and forecasting methods; economic valuation and ecological economics; sustainability indicators in resource and environmental systems; analysis of real-world case studies.
Classes 3 hrs. and lab 3 hrs. a week. / ENVS 4460 / GEOG 4444. Environmental Pattern Analysis and Modeling
3 credit hours
Prerequisites: 60 credit hours, including one of ENVS 1203, 2300, 2310, or GEOG 3304, and one of MATH 1216, GEOG 3326, MGSC 2207 or BIOL 2308
This course focuses on theory and practical methods for characterizing and modeling the structural and dynamic features relating to environmental systems. Practical applications include models and environmental systems related to rivers, lakes, coastal areas, fisheries, forests, ecosystems, underground mineral distribution, atmospheric variables (wind, temperature), and pollution.
Classes 3 hrs. and lab 3 hrs. a week.
COMMENTS: The Department of Geography wishes to propose a course change. The course ENVS 4460 is offered in the ENVS program and cross-listed as a GEOG course. The course change proposed – change of title and description – will need approval by the Faculty of Science as well as the Faculty of Arts. The instructor for the course will be Dr. Suteanu who holds a cross-appointment in ENVS and GEOG. He will teach the course every 2nd year, alternating between offering it as an ENVS course and a GEOG course.
The rationale for the course change is to reflect better the focus of the course on theory and methods of analysis and modeling of spatial patterns in the environment. This course is by its nature both geographical and environmental, and expected to be relevant to students in both disciplines. This change also affects: ENVS 6660 / GEOG 6660 (graduate courses)

COMMENTS: The proposed changes are designed to reflect the fact that ACST students now have several new course options at the 4000-level. Removing the specific course requirements at that level will provide ACST Majors with greater flexibility in completing their degree requirements. The changes will also allow students more opportunity to take intermediate level Group A courses at the 2000 and 3000 level. ACST Honours students will still be required to complete an additional six credits at the 4000 level with ACST 4500. [ACST 4511 & 4512 will be removed from the calendar
